S&P Global Considering Spinning Out Cap IQ - Why?

S&P Global is spinning out lower-margin, goodwill-heavy divisions (Mobility Global, Capital IQ) to improve parent company margins (targeting ~70% op margins), boost calculated ROIC through goodwill removal, and enable strategic focus on monopolistic Indices and Ratings businesses. SPGI fell ~5% on a miss that was the Mobility spin

SPGI's post-Mobility guidance cut was misinterpreted as business weakness when it actually reflects only the spinoff. The remaining core business (Ratings, Indices, Market Intelligence) grew strongly: Ratings & Indices +13–20% at ~70% margins. The market is conflating spinoff math with operational decline, creating a valuation opportunity if investors recognize the high-margin moat businesses remain intact.
